The History of the Alberta Beach Hotel
Originally built during the golden age of rail travel, the Alberta Beach Hotel was part of a larger recreational resort developed in the 1910s by the Canadian Northern Railway. Back then, a 16-foot-wide wooden boardwalk stretched over 2,000 feet along the lakefront. The area buzzed with day-trippers from Edmonton, arriving by special excursion trains to swim, dance, fish, and dine at the lake.
The original building burnt down in a fire in the early 1900s but was reconstructed with a different design in 1939. The building later renovated to add a second story and additional extensions.
The Alberta Beach Hotel served as a central social hub—a welcoming stop just off the boardwalk for weary travelers and excited vacationers alike. Though the original boardwalk no longer stands, the spirit of those sun-soaked summers lives on.
Today, the hotel remains a beachfront monument and community staple. The heart of the building still beats through Shirley’s Diner and the Alberta Beach Hotel Bar, where locals and visitors alike gather to share stories, good food, and a slice of small-town charm.
